It has been 26 days since most of us got the news that COVID-19 was going to impact our lives for a few weeks and April 6th was the magical date that was given for things to return to “normal”. Little did we know then, how unrealistic that date was, or how quickly things would change.
Our “new normal” has been an adjustment for many of us. I have shared on Social Media how my life has changed; my husband shares my office to work remotely for the company he works for, and my children are hanging around in various parts of the house, doing their very best to entertain themselves. Our daughter celebrated her 13th birthday isolated with just her immediate family watching FailArmy. Our son, who is 9 years old, is bored and is handling it the best way he knows how: by making pillow forts, watching YouTube and playing his PS3. It took us all the full week of March Break to really settle in and accept what our daily routine was going to be. I even joked with my husband that I feel like we are living our own “Groundhog Day” - referring to the Bill Murray movie.
I am sure that your story sounds similar to mine and many others. Let’s be frank, none of us thought this is how 2020 was going to turn-out to be, nor were we prepared for it. This was not part of any of our Vision Boards, Goal-setting sessions, or Strategic Plans! We are here now and being advised that this is our “new normal”. So, we all need to settle in and figure out how we can make it work for each of us so we can survive. I will assume that you are all doing what needs to be done to stay healthy and safe, so I want to give you 5 things you need to do for your business to survive COVID-19.
- Accept that things have changed. This is a really big step that we all have to do, it’s the last stage in the grieving process. Yes, grieving. We are all grieving because we have experienced a loss. A loss of freedom, a loss of certainty, a loss of our health and loss of peace. We are in transition and are faced with having to adapt our routines and what we know, and then re-invent ourselves and our businesses. We have to accept all of this in order to move forward and survive.
- Take your business virtual. This is not a new concept to some of us and will likely be near to impossible for some as their business revolves around in-person contact - such as a massage therapist or esthetician. I say near to impossible, simply because nothing is impossible.
- Think outside the box. Albert Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” You, nor I, can expect to do the same exact thing as we did before this situation and expect that we will get the same result as we did before. We are living in a world with a “new normal” where people are living in fear…fear of losing their lives and fear of not having the abundance they once did. We need to think of another way to help them. Their needs and wants have changed and you will need to figure out how you can solve their current issues, not the ones they had before this situation.
- Be in the know. We are in a new world where everything seems to be unknown. We don’t know when COVID-19 will go away, we do not know when or if our children will be going back to school, we don’t know if we will be able to pay our bills…this is our reality right now. Educate and empower yourself and find out what you can about financial subsidies that the Government and financial institutions are offering.
- Focus on what you can control. You can only control what you do, say and how you react. With this being the case, why not focus on your business and how to be of service? Be helpful to others, provide value, build relationships, have virtual coffee dates, offer something for free that will help a client or prospect get through this situation.
I am sure you have heard these 5 things before in some way. I know I have in various forms at various times. I also know that we all need to be reminded, especially when we are in such an emotionally charged situation. We are in this together. I am here to help you.
