No More Resolutions: 3 Things to do right now

Authored by Melissa Haddad on Jan 01 2019

Happy New Year!  Every January many of us make New Year’s Resolutions, and many of those resolutions don’t make it past the first month or two.  Let’s not make any more resolutions, let’s plan to be successful in everything we want to accomplish.  January is a great time to think about what you want your year to look like, both personally and professionally.

Being an entrepreneur, your professional and personal life are intertwined, especially if you work from home. Unlike being a “9 to 5” worker, where you are leaving and coming back to the house, which usually means work life stays at work and home life stays at home, the lines are not as defined for us.  Coming back from the Christmas Holidays for us entrepreneurs’ means that we are back to our first quarter, and everything that we are able to set the tone for in how we’d like life to look for us and our family.

Here are 3 things you can do right now to get your year started off on the right foot.

  1. Be SMART.  Instead of making Resolutions, perhaps you would be more successful to set SMART goals.  SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.  Instead of saying, “I want to lose weight.” You would say, “I want to lose 10 lbs by February 14 to fit into my black dress for Valentines’ Day so I can feel comfortable going out with my husband.” This is a much stronger statement and it has goals, reasoning and a timeframe, now all you have to do is plan how you are going to achieve that goal.  What do you need to do to lose that 10 lbs by February 14?  This process applies to anything you want to accomplish this year.  Write it out, action it and watch your successes unfold.

  2. SCHEDULE your weekly success.  I would like to thank my Success Coach, Carolyn Dickinson for this amazing tool.  The saying is, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” With Carolyn’s assistance, I have implemented this tool and I have organized myself to be able to create my life the way I need and want it to work for me.  I am in control of my calendar, my workload and my life and that is all thanks to Carolyn for sharing this tool and so much more.  This is how you will be able to action your SMART goals.  Please click on this link https://www.carolyndickinson.com to download your free gift (Free Weekly Success Map) from Carolyn Dickinson and be in control of your life.

  3. DELEGATE to other experts.  If you are anything like me, you have a “To Do” list that is longer than your arm and it continues to grow!  The Weekly Success Map will help you plan when you are to action these items, but because there are so many things, how do you choose where to start?  Being an entrepreneur, you wear many hats, most times too many, so you need to decide what items on that list are your “To Do’s” and what items on your list are “To Do’s” to delegate to someone else.  Here is a helpful hint, your items are the ones that require your expertise, whereas the items to delegate require the expertise of someone else.  Why?  Because you need to be at your peak performance for your clients and if you are overwhelmed with items at which you are not proficient in, you will only burn out…remember this is only the first quarter.

Take the first part of the first quarter to plan everything out.  If you do not already have help, seek it out, such as a Virtual Assistant (consider hiring one or more).
